Inter Miami's head coach Tata Martino confirms Lionel Messi as new captain, marking his debut in Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul

Posted : 25 July 2023
Inter Miami's head coach Tata Martino has confirmed that Lionel Messi will be the new captain of the team. Messi donned the captain's armband during his debut in the Leagues Cup match against Cruz Azul. In that game, he marked his first appearance for the MLS side with a stunning injury-time free-kick goal that secured a victory.

With Gregore out due to injury, Messi took over the captaincy from DeAndre Yedlin when he entered the game against Cruz Azul. Martino assured that Messi will continue as captain going forward.

In the upcoming match against Atlanta, both Messi and former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets are expected to have more playing time, potentially starting in the game. However, Martino emphasized that their participation will depend on their physical condition, as it will only be their second game for Inter Miami.

Martino praised Messi's impact on the team, mentioning that he has been actively involved in training sessions, providing guidance to his teammates and organizing the team on the field. The coach also highlighted that Messi's ability to decide games, like he did against Cruz Azul, is a characteristic that is almost habitual for him, making it seem like a normal occurrence.

There are also reports suggesting that Inter Miami might sign another former Barcelona teammate, Luis Suarez. Suarez, currently playing for Gremio, is reportedly willing to repay all the wages he has received in 2023, along with additional payments, in order to secure a move to the club. Inter Miami has cleared space for a new signing by acquiring an extra international roster slot.
