In the League Cup quarterfinals, Charlotte fell victim to the star player who sealed the match with a final goal in the 86th minute, securing a spot in the semi-finals. The next challenge for the winning team will be facing Thai Bribo's Philadelphia Union.
Another usual day at Inter Miami unfolded, with Lionel Messi showcasing his skills and his new team dominating the opposition. In the quarterfinal match against Charlotte, Inter Miami secured a convincing 4-0 victory on their home turf. Messi, who has been on fire since joining, scored his eighth goal in just five games. Interestingly, this was the first time he failed to score a brace when coming on as a substitute.
Although Messi's goal came in the final minutes, his teammates had already paved the way for victory. Joseph Martinez converted a penalty in the 12th minute, followed by a goal from Robert Taylor in the 32nd minute, giving the hosts a comfortable lead in the first half. Adilson Malanga's own goal in the 78th minute further solidified Inter Miami's dominance.
Messi's personal contribution to the scoreline occurred in the 86th minute, originating from a play he initiated. He attempted to find substitute striker Leonardo Campana with a pass, and Campana received the ball after a defensive error. Campana then played the ball back to Messi, who calmly struck it into the net from close range. Known for his creative goal celebrations, Messi marked this occasion with a gesture reminiscent of Spider-Man.
Inter Miami's semi-final opponent will be the Philadelphia Union, led by coach Thai Bribo. Despite the absence of the recently signed Israeli player, Philadelphia managed to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over Mexico's Querétaro in the quarterfinals. The winning goal was scored by Chris Donovan, finding the net 11 minutes into extra time.
