Inter Miami has officially confirmed the acquisition of Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets, reuniting him with his former teammate Lionel Messi.
At the age of 34, Busquets declared his departure from the La Liga champions in May, concluding an impressive 18-year stint with the club. The midfielder will now join forces with Messi, the 35-year-old Argentine forward who recently confirmed his move to Inter Miami from Paris St-Germain.
Busquets and Messi enjoyed a remarkable 13-season spell together at Barcelona from 2008 to 2021. During this period, they were integral members of a highly successful team that clinched three Champions League titles, eight La Liga championships, and six Copa del Rey trophies.
While there were reports of offers from Saudi Arabia, both Messi and Busquets have chosen to continue their careers at Inter Miami, the club owned by former football star David Beckham.
Busquets, a former captain of the Spanish national team, accumulated an impressive total of 722 appearances for Barcelona, placing him third in the club's history in terms of games played. Throughout his 15-year tenure with the senior squad, he contributed 18 goals and 40 assists.
Having initially joined Barcelona as a youth player in 2005, Busquets progressed through the ranks, representing the club's B team before making his first-team debut under manager Pep Guardiola in a league match against Racing Santander in 2008.
Barcelona described Busquets as "one of the best players ever to represent the club" when announcing his departure from the Nou Camp. In December, the midfield maestro retired from international football after securing victory in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championship with Spain.
