Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas revealed three-year negotiations for Lionel Messi, despite Barcelona and Al-Hilal considerations

Posted : 03 July 2023
Inter Miami CF owner Jorge Mas has revealed that it took three years of negotiations to bring Lionel Messi to the Major League Soccer club.

Despite initial considerations of a return to Barcelona or a move to Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal, Messi ultimately chose Inter Miami as a free agent after his tenure at Paris Saint-Germain.

Mas described the extensive efforts made by himself, fellow owner David Beckham, and conversations with Messi's father and agent, Jorge, over the course of a year and a half.

Mas shared that those discussions took place in various locations such as Barcelona, Miami, Rosario, and Doha. He emphasized the importance of not pressuring Messi during the process.

Mas also mentioned that the involvement of Apple, who recently announced a docuseries about Messi's World Cup journey, played a significant role in closing the deal.

Regarding Messi's contract with Inter Miami, it is expected to run until December 2025, with a potential extension for 2026. Mas confirmed that Messi will earn a substantial salary, ranging between £50 million and $60 million per year.

Mas expressed interest in surrounding Messi with familiar faces such as Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, but downplayed reports linking Luis Suarez and Angel Di Maria to the club this summer.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta explained that Messi's decision not to return to the club was due to his desire for less pressure. Laporta revealed that there was an agreement with LaLiga to allocate resources to Messi, but the player opted for a different path, as he had a challenging year in Paris and sought a change of environment.

The process to bring Messi to Inter Miami involved extensive negotiations over several years, culminating in a free agent agreement. The involvement of Apple and the desire to alleviate pressure were key factors in Messi's decision. The deal is expected to result in a lucrative contract for Messi with Inter Miami, and the club is exploring the possibility of adding other familiar players to the team.
