Ineos seeks 25% stake in Manchester United

Posted : 16 October 2023
Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos group is vying to take control of the football operations side of Manchester United's business from the Glazer family with a proposed 25% stake valued at approximately £1.3 billion.

This move marks a significant development in Ratcliffe's efforts to acquire a significant stake in the club. His main rival, Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, recently withdrew from the process after failing to meet the Glazers' valuation with his 100% buyout offer. Both Ineos and Sheikh Jassim had tabled bids of around £5 billion.

United Board Meeting and Mixed Reactions
A United board meeting is scheduled, where the agreement might be finalized. Ineos hopes that by acquiring a 25% stake and controlling the football side of the club's business, they can offer reassurance to supporters unhappy with the Glazers' continued ownership.

Notably, former United captain Gary Neville expressed concerns on social media about how a minority stakeholder could positively impact the club and its performance, echoing the sentiments of many fans who prefer a full exit of the Glazer family. Manchester United Supporters Trust has also emphasized the need for clarity and new investment into the club, calling for parties involved to prioritize the club's interests.

Background on Ineos and Manchester United
The Glazer family, who purchased Manchester United in 2005, announced their consideration of selling the club in November 2022, following protests from supporters. Ineos already has a presence in the sports industry, owning French Ligue 1 club Nice, Swiss club Lausanne, and being involved in high-profile sailing and Formula 1 teams.

Jim Ratcliffe, a lifelong United fan, made an unsuccessful attempt to purchase Chelsea last year. The potential stake acquisition could bring significant changes to the club's ownership structure and future direction, impacting both its on-field and off-field aspects.
