Ineos Group considers minority stake offer in Manchester United amid ownership uncertainty
Posted : 03 October 2023
Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group is contemplating the possibility of making an offer to acquire a minority share in Manchester United as a strategic move to resolve the current ownership dilemma.
In November, the Glazer family, the current owners of the club, publicly disclosed their consideration of selling Manchester United as part of their exploration of strategic alternatives. This announcement generated considerable interest, resulting in two notable offers from Ineos and Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, both valuing the club at around £5 billion.
Sheikh Jassim's representatives have consistently emphasized his intention to acquire 100% ownership of the club. In contrast, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has expressed his desire to secure a majority stake. However, faced with what appears to be a lack of action from the Glazer family in recent months, Ratcliffe is now exploring an alternative approach.
Purchasing a minority share may not be well-received by the passionate Manchester United supporters who have previously organized protests against the Glazer family, both inside and outside Old Trafford. Nevertheless, Ratcliffe may view this strategy as the most viable means of achieving long-term ownership of the club.
This approach would enable the Glazer family to maintain a significant shareholding in Manchester United, although the specific details of any potential agreement remain uncertain.
