Posted : 25 September 2024

It’s finally time for Lagos-based Ikorodu City FC to experience a home match against a wounded league champion, Rangers International FC.

This will be the first of 19 games played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, the home ground of the Oga Boys.

For the rescheduled Match Day 2 of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Ikorodu City FC will welcome the defending champions, Rangers International, for their first home game of the season and their first-ever home game in the top flight.

Following the club’s first-ever point in the league, which came away at Ilorin City Stadium against Kwara United, the team faces an acid test against the eight-time league champions in midweek, as well as another weekend home fixture against Nasarawa United on Sunday.

In team news, there is no cause for alarm, as every player is in good shape ahead of the first home game of the season.

Players who traveled for the away game against Kwara United FC are reportedly recovering well, and Bright has a fully fit squad to choose from for his first home match selection.

The title of “defending champions” doesn’t come easy. Rangers earned that title with a resounding performance last season, showcasing their youthful yet vastly experienced squad under the tutelage of Fidelis Ilechukwu, winning their eighth NPFL title with 70 points.

Rangers have only played one game this season, the opener against El Kanemi, which ended goalless.

They were recently knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Angolan side Sagrada Esperança and will visit Lagos as a wounded lion, looking to take a pound of flesh from their next opponents, making the game a bit tricky for us.

Head to Head

This will be the first official meeting (competitive or friendly) between both sides.

The only record of note is Ikorodu City's promotion to the NPFL at the home ground of their opponents, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, during the last NNL Super 8 promotion playoff.

After surviving back-to-back games on the road to start their NPFL journey, the team will now play in front of their home fans for the first time and even faces consecutive home games, with a massive opportunity to rack up points as the fans cheer them on.

The players have had their recovery session; the squad is large, and rotations are expected in various positions. The mentality is high, and the boys are ready to greet the cheers and smiling faces of the fans.

The match kicks off at 4:00 PM at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
