In what could simply be regarded as a brilliant display, league debutant Ikorodu City FC on Sunday edged closer to their first continental ticket, courtesy of a 3-0 win over Niger Tornadoes FC of Minna.
The Oga Boys, after being held to a goalless first half, quickly regrouped in the second half to ensure maximum points.
Ikorodu City had a potential breakthrough in the 30th minute when Solomon almost broke clean through on goal, but the flag was up for offside.
Back from the dugout for the second half, Nuruden Aweroro, the Technical Adviser of Ikorodu City FC, made a double substitution as Ayomide Cole and Chineme Chinonso replaced Okechukwu Nwanna and Emmanuel Solomon.
In the 70th minute, substitute Ayomide Cole arrived at the back post to stab home a delightful cross from Salau Yusuf.
Ikorodu City FC increased their goal tally in the 83rd minute as Shola Adelani calmly rounded the goalkeeper and found the back of the net for the second goal.
Ayomide Cole, however, registered his second consecutive brace in the league, scoring both goals off the bench as he slammed the loose ball into the roof of the net from a pass by Kelechi.
Speaking after the match, Aweroro refused to be drawn into the continental slot debate, saying it is too early.
“It is too early to talk about a continental ticket because we still have a few games left.
“We have a plan that we would like to stick with. Other clubs are also chasing the position we are in, so we need to be careful,” he said.
Ikorodu City FC now sits in fourth place with 52 points.
