Ikorodu City of Lagos has appointed Nurudeen Aweroro as the new head coach on an interim basis.
The position became vacant after former coach Bright Ozebagbe resigned.
Aweroro has declared his intention to finish in the top five, as Ikorodu City FC officially confirmed him as the club's manager on an interim basis.
The club also confirmed Ali Kandil as the first team assistant coach, Bayo Adebayo as the second assistant coach and trainee, while Sheriff Salami retained his position as goalkeeper coach. Courage Okeke serves as the club's data and performance analyst.
This marks the end of the consortium of assistant coaches' arrangement, signaling a revival for the club.
In the three matches under this arrangement, the team won two and drew one, with their last match resulting in a 4-2 victory over Lobi Stars at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Monday.
In his post-match interview, Nurudeen Aweroro stated that he is not a loser and won’t be satisfied until Ikorodu City FC makes the top five in the league.
“I feel very excited and very happy. I was able to survive today’s match; it was one of the best and toughest matches we have ever had, but I don’t want to be too happy until we make the top five in the league,” he said.
The team squandered a two-goal lead to end the first half at 2-2 but bounced back to win the match 4-2, marking their second victory of the season and moving them up from the bottom of the table to 17th position.
“Definitely, it was a loss of concentration among some of our players, especially the midfielders. After the first break, I told them that losing concentration is not acceptable.”
“I told them they need to come back and do better after the break. If they want to be champions, they must work like champions and adopt a winning mentality.”
“I am not a loser; I don’t want them to make me feel sad about their performance. I told them to give me two goals in the next fifteen minutes, which they did,” said Nurudeen.
Going forward, the coach emphasized that converting the numerous goal-scoring chances is the team's major challenge, and he will work on this deficiency as the season continues.
The team has scored nine goals this season, with seven of those scored in their last two matches, remaining unbeaten in their last three matches.
Ikorodu City FC has a total of seven points from eight matches, having conceded ten goals, with two draws and two victories in the eight-week-old 2024/2025 NPFL season.
