French Première Ligue club Montpellier HSC has officially announced the signing of Ifeoma Onumonu, the Super Falcons striker, on their website. This marks a historic moment as Onumonu becomes the first Nigerian player to join Montpellier Hérault Sport Club Féminines.
The move follows a mutual agreement between Onumonu and her former club, Utah Royals, where she was released as a free agent. This decision comes after Onumonu's time with the Utah Royals was cut short due to an ankle injury and her commitments with the Nigeria Women's National Team.
Onumonu's transfer to Montpellier HSC brings experience to the club's forward lineup. With a roster already featuring young talents such as Esther Mbakem Niaro, Nina Ngueleu, Lola Gstalter, and Elisa Rambaud, the addition of the 30-year-old striker is seen as a valuable enhancement to the team.
Originally from California, USA, Onumonu was traded to Utah Royals from NY/NJ Gotham FC in December 2023. Despite her move, her tenure with Utah was brief, limited to just five appearances due to her injury and international duties.
In July 2024, Onumonu was called up to Nigeria's 18-player squad for the 2024 Olympic Games in France, stepping in as a replacement for the injured Halimatu Ayinde. During the tournament, she made a notable contribution by playing a total of 54 minutes, including 24 minutes against Brazil and 30 minutes against Spain.
For the upcoming 2024-2025 season, Onumonu will wear the number 11 shirt at Montpellier HSC. Her arrival is highly anticipated as the club looks to strengthen its attacking options with her proven experience.
Montpellier HSC’s decision to bring Onumonu on board reflects their commitment to bolstering their squad with seasoned players who can contribute significantly on the field. The club and its supporters are eager to see the impact of this historic signing in the upcoming season.
