IFAB Introduces New Rules to Curb Time-Wasting

Posted : 01 March 2025

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) held a crucial meeting in Glasgow, signaling significant changes in football regulations. One of the key decisions made was aimed at reducing time-wasting, particularly by goalkeepers. Starting next season, if a goalkeeper holds the ball for more than eight seconds, the referee will award a corner kick to the opposing team. This rule is expected to discourage unnecessary delays and keep the game flowing more efficiently.

Another major proposal under discussion is the adoption of the "Wenger Law," a modification to the offside rule suggested by former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger in 2021. The proposed change states that a player will only be considered offside if their entire body is beyond the last line of defense at the moment the ball is played. This adjustment aims to encourage more attacking play and reduce controversial offside decisions, which often lead to interruptions and contentious debates.

In addition to these rule changes, IFAB is considering measures to enhance transparency in refereeing decisions. One proposal involves referees explaining their decisions in real-time via stadium public address systems, a method that was successfully tested during the 2023 Women's World Cup. According to Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s head of refereeing, this initiative would help fans better understand officiating calls and strengthen trust in the fairness of the game.

Another idea on the table is introducing a challenge system for coaches, similar to basketball, allowing teams to contest certain referee decisions through VAR reviews. Under this system, each team would have a limited number of challenges per match. If approved, this measure could add another layer of fairness and accuracy to decision-making, ensuring that crucial calls are thoroughly reviewed and minimizing potential refereeing errors.
