I'm jealous of you - Mikel envies Osimhen in 2023 Ballon d'Or rankings

Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel, expressed admiration for Victor Osimhen's outstanding Ballon d'Or achievement, acknowledging his jealousy toward the Napoli star.

Osimhen secured the 8th position in the 2023 Ballon d'Or awards held in Paris, France, making history as the first Nigerian to break into the top ten of the prestigious accolade.

During a conversation with Osimhen on the 'Obi One Podcast' on Monday, Mikel admitted his surprise, stating, "I'm envious; I never reached that stage. I believed I was the most decorated Nigerian player."

He continued, highlighting the significance of Osimhen's achievement, noting that even legendary players like Jay Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu never attained such recognition. Mikel commended Osimhen for setting a new standard and thanked him for elevating the status of Nigerian football on the global stage.

Osimhen's nomination for the Ballon d'Or and subsequent top-ten placement marked a groundbreaking moment for Nigerian football. His stellar performance with Napoli, contributing to their Serie A title after 33 years and securing the Pichichi award as the top goalscorer, further solidified his place in history.

At 24, Osimhen became the first African to claim the Pichichi award, scoring 26 goals in the process. His remarkable achievements positioned him as the highest-ranked African player in this year's Ballon d'Or, with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah coming closest at the eleventh spot.
