‘I Had No Choice’ - Before Manchester United Conceded Two Late Goals Owing to "Poor Luck," Erik Ten Hag Explains Perplexing Man Utd Changes

Posted : 18 April 2023
With the help of two late own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire, Sevilla stunned the Red Devils on Thursday at Old Trafford.

Following Raphael Varane's forced replacement, their manager Ten Hag replaced Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, and Anthony Martial with Christian Eriksen, Anthony Elanga, and Wout Weghorst, around an hour into the match with United leading 2-0.

The manager had little choice when Lisandro Martinez fell to the ground and hurt his lower limb since Antony, one of the greatest players on the field, had already been replaced by Facundo Pellistri in the 81st minute.

When questioned, however, Ten Hag vehemently defended his decision and timing with regard to the adjustments:

"I had to make them. There was no other way. Rapha was injured, that was the first I had to make. And then Anthony Martial, first start after a long period, so we had to make him on the 60. Then Bruno: I got the warning from the refs, he was short before a second booking and the same for Antony dos Santos. So I had to make the subs, I had no other choice."
