"I could've scored four," says Osimhen, regrets missed chances

Posted : 08 November 2024

Galatasaray secured their third victory in the Europa League group stage with a thrilling 3-2 win over Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur at Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi RAMS Park on Thursday night.

Victor Osimhen was the standout player, scoring twice in the hard-fought contest against the north London club. This marked a significant milestone for the African Footballer of the Year, as it was his first-ever brace in a European competition's first half.

The game saw early drama as Yunus Akgün opened the scoring for Galatasaray, only for Will Lankshear to equalize for Tottenham. However, Osimhen quickly put his side back in front with a composed first-time finish, courtesy of a precise pass from Dries Mertens in the 31st minute.

Less than ten minutes later, Osimhen added another goal, positioning himself perfectly to leap and score with his left foot from close range, doubling Galatasaray’s advantage in the 39th minute.

Despite his stellar performance and contribution to the victory, Osimhen was left frustrated for not scoring more. Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, he expressed regret, saying, "I could have scored four goals. Towards the end, I lost focus a bit, which is normal, but I was really angry at myself for that."

The win lifted Galatasaray above Tottenham in the group standings, with the Turkish side now boasting ten points from four matches. Osimhen was pleased with the team's progress and optimistic about their chances in the competition.

Looking ahead, the 25-year-old striker believes Galatasaray has the potential to go far in the Europa League, saying, “We have the quality to keep building on this momentum. It’s a big win for us, and I think we have the squad to go further and challenge for the title. It won’t be easy, but we’re ready for any challenges ahead.”
