Hummels' Late Equalizer Denies Spurs in Europa League Clash with Roma

Posted : 29 November 2024

Veteran defender Mats Hummels scored a late equalizer to deny Tottenham a win against Roma in the Europa League, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw. The 35-year-old Germany international, making his first European appearance since the Champions League final in July, had initially given away a penalty in the fifth minute but redeemed himself in stoppage time, tapping in Angelino's whipped cross. Spurs had dominated much of the match following Son Heung-min's penalty, which came after Hummels fouled Pape Matar Sarr in the box.

Despite Roma’s early setback, Tottenham were unable to extend their lead. Brennan Johnson added a well-taken first-time finish after a cutback from Dejan Kulusevski, while Stephan El Shaarawy saw an excellent volley ruled out by VAR for offside. Spurs should have capitalized on their chances in the first half, as Johnson’s effort was cleared off the line, Dominic Solanke had his shot saved, and Son missed a rebound following a post-hit from Kulusevski.

Although Spurs looked comfortable for much of the match, Roma mounted a second-half response. Angelino hit the bar with a first-time volley, while Porro’s free-kick and Solanke’s shot both struck the woodwork. Roma also had two goals ruled out for offside, with Artem Dovbyk and Manu Kone both seeing their strikes disallowed. Spurs’ inability to capitalize on their dominance allowed Roma to gain momentum late in the match.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou had limited options due to injuries and made late changes, including Yves Bissouma, Timo Werner, James Maddison, and Lucas Bergvall, but they were unable to resist Roma’s pressure. With their 1-1 draw, Spurs sit ninth in the Europa League group, outside the top eight that avoid the play-off round. Roma, on the other hand, have shown resilience under their third manager of the season, Claudio Ranieri, who came out of retirement to take charge of his boyhood club.
