Godwin Enakhena, the Chairman of Sporting Lagos FC, announced on Thursday that the club's board had decided to dismiss the former coach of the team, Paul Offor, after the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 30.
Enakhena hinted at this decision in an interview in Lagos, where he explained the reason the club had to remove Offor from his position on the technical bench.
News of the sacking of the Sporting Lagos Coach surfaced on Wednesday after the club issued a press statement regarding the situation.
The Tech Boys have been struggling following the team's less-than-impressive performances in the league.
In the last league fixture played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Tuesday, in a Southwest derby, Sporting Lagos FC struggled to beat Sunshine Stars 1-0.
Also, anticipating his dismissal, Offor did not attend the post-match briefing, while his assistant, Micah Bello, provided the briefing.
However, Enakhena stated that the team needed to rectify certain issues.
"The decision to part ways with Offor was made after the match against Sunshine Stars FC, as things were not going well before," he said.
"We held a meeting and decided to let him go and replace him with former Kwara United, Katsina United, and Niger Tornadoes coach, Ibrahim Biffo, to lead the team," he added.
In a statement, Sporting Lagos FC thanked the former coach Offor for ensuring the team's qualification to the elite league during his tenure as the chief tactician.
"On behalf of everyone at Sporting Lagos, the Club would like to express its gratitude to Coach Paul for his efforts and achievements during his time with the club.
"Coach Paul will forever have a place in Sporting Lagos history after leading us to our first-ever NPFL promotion and winning our first-ever piece of silverware — the Naija Super 8 Competition.
"The Club and fans alike will miss the energy and expertise he brought to the touchline. Thank you, Coach Paul," the statement read.
It further stated, "After reviewing our performance so far this season, the club believes it is the right time to make a change.
"Coach Paul will depart with his assistant coaches, Coach Micah Bello and Coach Edward Green. We are grateful for their time at Sporting Lagos.
"The team will focus on remaining in the top flight for the final eight (8) matches of our inaugural season," the statement concluded. Biffo will now oversee the affairs of the club until the end of the season.
