Hope Powell: England's men's U20 World Cup backroom squad welcomes a former Lionesses manager

Posted : 20 May 2023
Hope Powell, a former manager of the England women's team, has joined the Three Lions coaching staff for the Under-20 World Cup.

Powell, who oversaw the Lionesses from 1998 to 2013, will act as the tournament's technical advisor. The competition gets underway in Argentina on Saturday.

Ian Foster, the coach of England's under-20 team, stated that her extensive experience playing international football and the knowledge she has from working with FIFA would be helpful.

In 2009, Powell led England's female athletes to the European Championship final, where Germany defeated them, and two World Cup victories.

The 56-year-old was most recently in command of Brighton from 2017 and 2022 in the Women's Super League (WSL). He previously served as the head coach of the Great Britain women's team in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Her hiring is made possible thanks to the England Elite Coach Programme, a collaboration between the Football Association (FA) and players' union the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) that aims to give underrepresented coaches and support staff the chance to work with the England national teams.
