Honduras staged a comeback to defeat Haiti 2-1 in their final Group B match of the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, held at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The outcome, along with Qatar's 1-0 win over Mexico, means that neither team will progress from Group B. Both squads will now shift their focus to the upcoming Concacaf Nations League, which kicks off in September and offers the chance to secure spots in the 2024 Concacaf Nations League Final Four and the 2024 Copa America in the United States.
Haiti took the lead in the 20th minute through a goal from forward Frantzdy Pierrot. His strike partner, Duckens Nazon, unleashed a shot from near the corner of the penalty area that was initially saved by Honduras goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar. However, Menjivar couldn't control the rebound, allowing Pierrot to tap in from close range and put Haiti in a favorable position to advance.
After Haiti's opener, it was Honduras who came closest to finding the back of the net. In the 24th minute, Honduras defender Devron Garcia sent a header from a corner kick just over the crossbar. Then, in the 30th minute, forward Jorge Benguche managed to create enough space in the box to unleash a shot on target, but Haiti goalkeeper Alexandre Pierre dived to his right and made a crucial save.
Honduras continued to search for the equalizer, and their opportunity arrived in the 43rd minute. Forward Jerry Bengtson nodded a header towards the back post after a cross from defender Maylor Nunez. With that goal, the 36-year-old Bengtson became Honduras' oldest-ever scorer in the Gold Cup.
In the second half, Honduras extended their lead. In the 59th minute, midfielder Jorge Alvarez played a lofted pass over Haiti's defensive line, which was controlled expertly by his club and national teammate, Jose Pinto. Pinto calmly finished with his first touch to give Honduras a 2-1 advantage.
Haiti came close to equalizing in stoppage time when forward Fafa Picault attempted a long-range shot that took a tricky bounce in front of the goal, beating Menjivar. However, luck was on Honduras' side as the ball struck the post and Menjivar ultimately collected it.
