High Stakes on Matchday 5 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup

Posted : 22 October 2024

Groups A and B of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup have delivered thrilling matches, but the drama is set to escalate on Matchday 5 as teams vie for advancement to the knockout stage. Ecuador and the USA appear poised to join Nigeria and Spain in the quarter-finals, while the Dominican Republic, New Zealand, Colombia, and Korea Republic are still seeking their first victories. These teams face must-win situations to avoid elimination, raising the stakes significantly.

In Group A, the Dominican Republic will take on Nigeria at the Felix Sanchez Stadium in Santo Domingo. The hosts celebrated a historic moment during Matchday 3 when Yuleinis Brito scored the Dominican Republic's first-ever goal at a FIFA Women’s World Cup™, earning them a crucial point against New Zealand.

However, they face a daunting challenge against Nigeria, who are fresh off a dominant performance with eight goals and six points from their opening two matches. A win for the Dominican Republic could still keep their hopes alive, depending on the other group's outcomes.

Ecuador will also be competing against New Zealand at the CFC Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros. Despite suffering a heavy 4-0 loss to Nigeria, Ecuador retains control of their qualification destiny due to their initial win over the Dominican Republic.

A draw may suffice for them to progress, while a victory would guarantee their spot in the knockout round. In contrast, New Zealand needs a win to stay in contention after their draw with the Dominican Republic, which marked only their second draw in 23 U-17 Women’s World Cup group matches.

Turning to Group B, Spain is set to face Colombia at the Felix Sanchez Stadium. After a commanding 5-0 victory over Korea Republic, Spain has already secured their place in the quarter-finals. Although they will be without their star player Alba Cerrato due to a late red card, they remain favourites to advance.

For Colombia, their path is more challenging; they must defeat Spain while hoping for favourable results in the other matches to keep their qualification dreams alive. In the other Group B match, the USA will square off against Korea Republic, with the Americans aiming for victory to ensure their progression, while Korea Republic needs a win and some luck in the other match to advance.
