Jordan Henderson, the English midfielder, has expressed his hurt over criticism for his move to Saudi club Al-Ettifaq. Henderson, who previously played for Liverpool, is known for his vocal support of LGBTQ+ causes. However, his transfer to a country where same-sex sexual activity is illegal has sparked criticism from some LGBTQ+ campaigners.
Henderson responded to the criticism, emphasizing that his intention has always been to support causes and communities. He stated that the accusations hurt him deeply and apologized for making anyone feel that he had turned his back on them. He emphasized that he hasn't changed as a person.
The 33-year-old midfielder has been a strong advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, wearing rainbow laces and armbands to show his support. He expressed his commitment to helping the LGBTQ+ community and said he has family and friends within that community.
Henderson's move to Al-Ettifaq reunited him with former Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard, who became the club's manager in July.
Despite the criticism, Henderson stands by his values and hasn't ruled out wearing rainbow laces in Saudi Arabia. He believes it's essential to be respectful of the local culture and religion. Henderson is interested in using his profile to promote positive change in Saudi Arabia and grow the sport he loves in a new country.
He stated that his views and values haven't changed, and having someone with those views and values in Saudi Arabia can have a positive impact.
However, Liverpool's LGBTQ+ fan group, Kop Outs, called on Henderson to stand by his professed support for LGBTQ+ rights and basic human dignity. They emphasized that actions speak louder than words and expressed skepticism about his apology.
Henderson acknowledged that it's challenging to navigate cultural differences but believes that criticizing another country from afar without attempting to effect change isn't productive.
