Heartland International FC followed Gombe United FC back to the lower league on Wednesday after a disappointing 1-4 defeat at the hands of title-chasing Remo Stars FC.

Match Day 36 of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) took place at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, with two goals from Stanley Joseph in the 23rd and 69th minutes, and one goal each from Mawuena in the 38th minute and Joseph Fatokun in the 93rd minute.

The victory on Match Day 36 keeps Remo Stars in contention for the NPFL title but condemns Heartland FC to relegation as the season nears its conclusion.

Stanley Joseph’s performance was the highlight of the match. His first goal came in the 14th minute, giving Remo Stars a 1-0 lead, while the second goal was scored in the 69th minute from a beautifully executed free-kick, curling the ball into the net with precision and flair.

Joseph said, “We remain focused until the end of the season and we keep our eyes on where we believe we should be. We will not be distracted by any victory at this moment. We just want to ensure that we maintain focus and avoid distractions in any way.”

Despite the comprehensive nature of the win, Joseph stressed the need for continued diligence and teamwork.

“Scoring the brace brings us joy as a team because we need goals to reach our destination. Two more games. We remain focused and we believe as a team that we can. And because we believe, we can surely achieve.”

With this victory, Remo Stars remain firmly in the title race, sitting second on the NPFL table with 62 points, just two points behind leaders Enugu Rangers.

As the season heads into its final two matches, Remo Stars will hope for a slip-up from Enugu Rangers to claim the top spot and secure the championship.
