Heartland FC came close to securing their first victory of the season, but a last-minute goal from former player Jonathan Alukwu denied them that opportunity at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. The Match Day 9 tie against Sporting Lagos ended in a 1-1 draw.
Naze Millionaires' head coach, Christian Obi, made three changes to the team that drew at home to Bayelsa United, with Christian Molokwu, Fabian Omaka, and Ezekiel Bassey replacing Andrew Abalogu, Samuel Stone, and Austin Osayande.
Despite facing bombardments from the hosts, Heartland FC held strong in the first half, hitting the woodwork themselves. In the second half, they scored an own goal in the 76th minute, seemingly securing the lead. However, Sporting Lagos equalized in the 97th minute through Jonathan Alukwu.
Heartland FC goalkeeper Chisom Chiaha made crucial saves, but the late equalizer denied them a victory. Ikechukwu Chinedu, one of the team's standout performers, expressed mixed feelings about the result, acknowledging the positive outing but expressing sadness over the missed opportunity.
Chinedu emphasized the team's progress and optimism, stating that the performance in Lagos brought them closer to ending their winless start. Despite the draw, Heartland FC remains in the relegation zone, holding the 20th position with six points from six draws and three losses.
Looking ahead, Heartland FC is determined to turn the tide as they face Enyimba International FC in their next game in Owerri, aiming for a home win. Sporting Lagos FC, positioned 8th with 12 points, will embark on an away match against Sunshine Stars of Akure for Match Day 10, another Southwest derby.
