Harry Maguire has expressed his ability to handle hostile treatment from opposition supporters and how it takes the pressure off his England teammates. This comes after the Manchester United centre-back faced ridicule from Scotland fans following an own goal he scored during a match.
Maguire came on as a substitute at half-time when England was leading 2-0, but he accidentally scored an own goal, giving Scotland an opportunity. Despite the mocking he received from Scottish fans, Maguire described it as "a little bit of banter."
He stated, "It pretty much takes the pressure away from my teammates and puts it all on myself. It makes them play better, for sure."
Maguire was aware of the hostile atmosphere in Scotland and how it can affect players. He said, "We knew coming here, when you hear the national anthem and the way they disrespect that, we knew it would be hostile, and in the second half, I got most of it. I am happy to go with that, don't worry about that."
England manager Gareth Southgate has faced criticism for selecting Maguire despite his limited playing time at Manchester United. Southgate defended Maguire, describing the treatment he has received from fans and media pundits as a "joke."
Maguire's mother, Zoe, also expressed her frustration with the negative and abusive comments her son has received. In an Instagram post, she called it "disgraceful and totally unacceptable" and wished that no other parents or players would have to go through such abuse.
Despite the challenges, Maguire remains mentally strong and is confident in his ability to overcome the situation. He acknowledged the initial difficulties of not being selected by his club manager but expressed optimism about playing more games in the future.
Maguire's career has seen its share of ups and downs, including being stripped of the club captaincy at Manchester United. However, he remains committed to performing at his best and facing challenges head-on.
