Harry Kane's future uncertain amid Bayern Munich pursuit
Posted : 06 August 2023
Harry Kane showcased his goal-scoring prowess, netting four goals in Tottenham Hotspur's 5-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in their final pre-season friendly before the Premier League kick-off. Despite the impressive performance, Kane's future at Spurs remains uncertain, with Bayern Munich showing keen interest as he has only one year left on his contract.
In contrast, Kane's England teammate, Harry Maguire, had a mixed day for Manchester United. He faced boos from Red Devils fans after an errant pass led to Athletic Bilbao's opening goal in Dublin. However, Maguire later made amends by assisting Facundo Pellistri's stoppage-time equalizer.
For Tottenham, the match marked manager Ange Postecoglou's first game in front of home supporters at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with their previous friendlies taking place during a tour of Asia. Postecoglou must be eager to retain the services of Kane, given the striker's virtuoso performance that left the fans chanting "we want you to stay."
Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot after a foul on James Maddison, who later assisted Kane's second goal with a pinpoint cross. The link-up between the two international teammates showed promise, but Kane's hat-trick came from a well-executed ball from Dejan Kulusevski. He completed his fourth goal by tapping in the rebound from Manor Solomon's shot.
After securing the victory, Spurs brought on substitute Dane Scarlett, who added a fifth goal with a powerful strike during stoppage time. The charity match was held to raise funds for Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion.
Tottenham's Premier League campaign will begin with an away match against Brentford on 13 August. The club and fans will be hopeful that Kane's impressive display in the friendly is a sign of things to come in the upcoming season.
