Hansi Flick to Sign Two-Year Contract with Barcelona as Xavi Departs

Posted : 28 May 2024

Hansi Flick is expected to arrive in Barcelona today (Tuesday) and, according to reports, will sign a two-year contract to become the new head coach of the Catalan team. As the club prepares for this new chapter under the German coach, local media continues to highlight the circumstances surrounding the departure of Xavi, the former coach. Last week, the club's leadership ultimately decided not to extend Xavi's tenure for another season, opting instead for a change in management.

Journalist Javi Miguel from "AS" reports that Xavi, through his agent Fernando Solanas, has communicated his willingness to assist Barcelona by forgoing around nine million euros of the compensation owed to him for the upcoming season. However, he has stipulated that this concession is contingent upon all members of his coaching staff also departing with him and receiving their full salaries for the next season. Xavi's staff, comprising eight members, expects to receive approximately three million euros in total, alongside the amount Xavi is willing to relinquish.

The eight staff members, seven of whom joined him from Al Sadd in Qatar two and a half years ago, are at the center of this financial negotiation. The combined compensation package for these staff members, along with Xavi's own financial sacrifice, totals around twelve million euros. This arrangement aims to ensure that all parties involved are fairly compensated according to legal entitlements following the club's decision to terminate their contracts.

Meanwhile, another reporter, Luis Rujo, has noted that tensions between Xavi and defender Ronald Araujo escalated towards the end of the season. The club now hopes that the anticipated arrival of Flick will help retain Araujo, who is being actively pursued by Bayern Munich. Additionally, Barcelona is keen to bring back Xavi Simons, a former youth player sold to Paris Saint-Germain. Simons, after a successful season at Leipzig, is considering activating a clause in his contract that allows him to choose a loan destination, with Barcelona being his preferred choice.
