Gyokeres' Hat-Trick Powers Sporting to Stunning Win Over Manchester City in Champions League

Posted : 06 November 2024

Viktor Gyokeres delivered a stunning hat-trick as Ruben Amorim's Sporting Lisbon shocked Manchester City with a 4-1 win in the Champions League on Tuesday. Despite an early goal from Phil Foden that put City ahead, Sporting mounted a comeback.

Gyokeres equalized just before halftime and then helped Sporting take the lead early in the second half, followed by a penalty conversion after a foul by Josko Gvardiol. City had a chance to pull one back, but Erling Haaland missed a penalty, and Gyokeres sealed his hat-trick with another spot-kick, leaving City to suffer their heaviest Champions League defeat since 2018.

Sporting's remarkable victory came as Amorim, who will leave for Manchester United, aimed to cap off his tenure at the club with a memorable performance. Gyokeres' goal-scoring form this season, with 23 goals in 17 games, has solidified his reputation as one of Europe’s top strikers. Amorim described the night as "special" and felt it was destined to end in such a way, paying tribute to the collective effort of the team during his tenure at Sporting.

Meanwhile, Liverpool dominated Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen with a 4-0 victory, propelled by a hat-trick from Luis Diaz. After a goalless first half, Diaz opened the scoring just after the hour mark, and then added two more goals to complete his hat-trick, with Cody Gakpo also getting on the scoresheet. The result lifted Liverpool to 12 points, maintaining a perfect record, while Leverkusen remained on seven points.

In Spain, AC Milan stunned Real Madrid with a 3-1 win, handing the holders their second loss in four matches. Milan took an early lead through Malick Thiaw, and after Real equalized with a penalty from Vinicius Junior, Alvaro Morata put Milan back ahead. Milan sealed the victory with a third goal from Tijjani Reijnders.

Real Madrid's recent struggles continued, as Antonio Ruediger’s late effort was ruled out. Elsewhere, other clubs such as Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus all registered important results in their respective matches.
