Gusau makes case for NPFL players in Super Eagles squad

Posted : 01 December 2023

The Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Ibrahim Gusau, has advocated for players in the league to be included in the Super Eagles, aiming to inspire players to stay in the country rather than seeking clubs abroad.

Gusau made a compelling appeal for the inclusion of NPFL players, pointing out a noticeable decline in the form of the current Super Eagles, which could be attributed to the absence of opposition from home-based players.

The plea by Gusau was a key highlight of the communique reached at the inaugural NPFL Board and Staff retreat in Abuja.

During the interactive session, the Board members and Staff emphasized the need for the NPFL to create heroes to attract larger numbers of fans to the stadium.

"It is recommended that the NPFL Board reach out to the NFF with a proposal that NPFL players must be included in future call-ups to improve their confidence and quality of play," the statement read.

Gusau, who officially opened the retreat, commended the NPFL Board for the bold plan to reposition the league. He expressed the NFF's support for forward-looking propositions to add value, enhance competitiveness, and attract investors and sponsors to grow domestic football.

"I came here today to lend support to this innovative idea of changing the narratives about Nigerian football and will challenge the NPFL Board to extend this to also having a resource session with the Clubs," Gusau stated in his address.

Explaining his call to extend the retreat to club officers, the NFF President emphasized that most of the issues the NPFL deals with are related to the activities of the clubs, as they are the major centers for showcasing the league's strengths and weaknesses.

"I am always available to support initiatives that will change the narratives about our league," Gusau assured the gathering of the NPFL Board members and staff hierarchy.

The NPFL Chairman stated that the purpose of the retreat was to achieve a multipurpose objective of reviewing the last season's performance, with a view to improving observed lapses and building on successful aspects.

Elegbeleye listed several developments in the season, including securing television deals on two platforms: Over The Top (OTT) with Propel Sports Africa and Direct To Home (DTH) signed with StarTimes.

"This retreat is to provide us a cordial forum for the Board and Staff to exchange ideas without inhibitions and to have firsthand knowledge of how the Board can intervene to improve processes to achieve more than we have done so far," explained the NPFL Chairman.
