Borussia Dortmund secured their first Bundesliga victory under new coach Niko Kovac with a dominant 6-0 win over Union Berlin, powered by a four-goal performance from Serhou Guirassy. The Guinea international delivered a stunning display, scoring three of his goals in an eight-minute span late in the second half.
His efforts took his Bundesliga tally to 13 goals, adding to the 10 he has netted in the Champions League, where Dortmund is set to face Lille in the Round of 16 next month. The win lifted Dortmund to 10th place in the standings with 32 points, marking only their second league victory in their last eight matches.
Kovac, who took charge in late January, expressed satisfaction with the result but downplayed any celebrations, emphasizing the need to stay focused on upcoming challenges. "I am happy that we won a league game now and in a way that I liked," he said in a press conference.
"We have big matches coming up in the league and the Champions League, and that’s where the focus is." Despite previous struggles under his leadership, Dortmund’s dominant performance suggested they could be turning a corner under his guidance.
Dortmund took the lead in the 25th minute when former Union Berlin player Julian Ryerson’s shot was deflected in for an own goal by Diogo Leite. They nearly doubled their lead moments later when Maximilian Beier’s header struck the crossbar.
However, they found the second goal in the 40th minute when Guirassy headed in a precise cross from Pascal Gross. That breakthrough set the stage for a relentless second-half display, where Dortmund dismantled Union Berlin’s defensive line.
Guirassy extended the lead in the 75th minute with a close-range strike before completing his hat-trick five minutes later, converting from Beier’s assist. With Union’s defense collapsing, he netted his fourth in the 83rd minute, once again heading in a Gross cross. Beier capped off Dortmund’s emphatic victory with a goal in the 90th minute, sealing a statement performance that could reignite their season.
