Guinea-Bissau is always considered as outsiders among the big footballing countries in Africa. Yet, in some recent performances, the country has proved that they are not pushovers.
Guinea-Bissau will once again meet Nigeria during the AFCON, recalling the unforgettable double-header clash loss in March last year.
For this AFCON 2024, Guinea-Bissau will surely be in hot water, given the herculean task of playing the ceremonial first match against Cote d'Ivoire on January 13th. With this all-important clash in mind, Guinea-Bissau should expect a baptism of fire and must play well if they are to have any hope of making it out of the group stage for the first time in their history.
Guinea-Bissau's Candé is in his fourth consecutive AFCON, a streak better than tournament favorites Nigeria and Ghana. The Djurtus have also enjoyed a promising 2023, losing only twice to Nigeria and Guinea while remaining unbeaten in World Cup qualification.
As one of the younger teams at the tournament, many have predicted that Guinea-Bissau will struggle in Ivory Coast. While they have Mama Balde and Fali Candé representing Lyon and Metz in Ligue 1, most of the squad plays in lesser-known leagues across Europe and Asia.
In a weaker group, Guinea-Bissau would have a real chance of getting through. This year, it looks unlikely that they will advance out of Group A.
