Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed concerns about the club’s prospects of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League. Despite their impressive record of 14 consecutive seasons in Europe’s premier club competition, City currently sit seventh in the Premier League table, trailing Nottingham Forest in fourth by four points and Bournemouth in fifth by one point. England’s favorable position in UEFA’s European Performance Spot rankings might secure a fifth Champions League spot for next season, but City’s current form leaves them at risk of missing out.
Guardiola has emphasized the significance of Champions League qualification, reflecting on the struggles of previously dominant English clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United, who experienced extended periods outside the competition. City’s upcoming fixtures against Everton, Leicester, and West Ham—all teams in the bottom seven—provide a crucial opportunity to recover from their recent poor form. Over the last eight league matches, Guardiola’s side has managed only four points, a run that has jeopardized their European aspirations.
The competition for Champions League places has become unexpectedly fierce this season. Alongside Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, teams like Aston Villa, Newcastle, Fulham, and Brighton are firmly in the mix, all posing a significant threat to City’s chances. Guardiola acknowledged the crowded field of contenders, noting that City’s struggles stem from their inability to resolve internal challenges and deliver consistent performances. Their nine losses in the last 12 matches across all competitions have only heightened the pressure.
Reflecting on the broader Premier League trends, Guardiola highlighted how traditionally dominant teams such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea have experienced their own periods outside Europe’s elite competition. However, he remained clear-eyed about City’s situation, admitting that failure to qualify would be the result of their shortcomings. "If we don't qualify, it’s because we didn’t deserve it," he stated, underlining the importance of resolving their issues to keep their Champions League streak alive.
