Guardiola Sees Champions League Qualification as a Success Despite City's Struggles

Posted : 14 March 2025

Pep Guardiola expressed confidence about Manchester City's chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, despite the team sitting in fifth place with only 10 games remaining. He emphasized that securing a top-four finish would be a significant achievement, given the challenges of this season.

Guardiola acknowledged that City’s high standards haven’t been met this year, with the team losing nine of their last 19 league matches, but he remains focused on controlling their own destiny.

City's position is precarious, with just five points separating them from Fulham in 10th, and the manager stressed that the team’s qualification hopes are entirely in their hands.

Guardiola noted that, unlike previous seasons, City is not relying on others to slip up, but rather on their own performance and behavior to secure Champions League football.

He described the current situation as a challenge and highlighted that sometimes, seasons in sport are tough, but it’s important to embrace the fight.

Guardiola also reflected on City’s disappointing early exit from this season’s Champions League, acknowledging they didn’t deserve to be in the competition's latter stages. After a heavy defeat to Real Madrid in the play-offs, City failed to make it past the last 16 for the first time since 2012/13.

With Brighton emerging as a strong contender for a Champions League spot, Guardiola praised their consistency and organization, recognizing them as one of the most impressive clubs in the league this season.
