Guardiola Mocks Liverpool Over Failure to Match City's 100-Point Record

Posted : 15 February 2025

Pep Guardiola has taken a jab at Premier League leaders Liverpool, highlighting their inability to match Manchester City's record 100-point season. Despite Liverpool's commanding position at the top of the table, seven points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, Guardiola pointed out that even if they win the title, they cannot surpass the milestone his City team set in 2017-18.

With City currently fifth and 16 points behind Liverpool, the Spanish manager defended his team’s legacy amid criticism following their 3-2 home defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off round first leg.

Guardiola emphasized the standards City have set in English football, questioning whether any team can achieve what his side did. He noted that Liverpool, even in their best form this season, will fall short of 100 points, reaching at most 99.

Acknowledging his team's struggles, he admitted that City's dominance has slipped, citing injuries and fatigue as key reasons for their inconsistency. Guardiola recalled a conversation with Ilkay Gundogan, who left City for Barcelona before returning for a visit, with the German midfielder expressing surprise at how much the Premier League had evolved.

The City boss admitted that this season has been a humbling experience, as many of his players have never faced such adversity. He stated that after years of dominance, it is natural for his squad to endure a difficult season, stressing that consistency has been lacking.

Guardiola pointed out that City have not been able to field their best players regularly, contributing to their drop in performance. While he accepted the current reality, he also reminded everyone that their past success was far from normal.

A key issue, according to Guardiola, has been City's inability to capitalize on their possession, a hallmark of their previous dominance. He noted that while he expects his team to struggle when opponents control the ball, it is now happening even when City have possession.

This shift, he admitted, is something he has not been able to change yet, attributing it to the human nature of his players. As City prepare to face Newcastle, Guardiola remains determined to address these struggles but accepts that this season has been a learning curve for both him and his squad.
