Guardiola Jokes FA Cup Win Over Leyton Orient Saved His Job

Posted : 08 February 2025

Pep Guardiola joked that Manchester City's 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round win over Leyton Orient may have saved his job after his team faced a potential shock elimination. Orient led at halftime thanks to a bizarre own goal from City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, following a long-range strike from Jamie Donley that rattled the crossbar and bounced off Ortega's back.

However, second-half goals from Abdukodir Khusanov and Kevin De Bruyne turned the game around, securing a crucial victory for Guardiola and his side.

Despite the win, Guardiola faced chants from the Orient fans, with some singing about his future at City. When asked about the atmosphere, he quipped that he didn’t enjoy hearing chants of "you’re going to get sacked in the morning," though he acknowledged it had become a common occurrence in stadiums.

Guardiola humorously added that this result likely ensured he wouldn’t be fired the next day by City’s chairman.

Guardiola expressed his appreciation for the atmosphere at Orient’s stadium, highlighting the tightness of the locker room and the passion from the players. He reflected on his own career, reminding his players of their humble beginnings in lower divisions before reaching the heights of top-tier football.

Guardiola also emphasized the unpredictable nature of the FA Cup, which has a long history of surprises, and how important it was for City to avoid another setback after their struggles in the Premier League.

Looking ahead, City face Real Madrid in the Champions League knockout phase play-off, a game that will be crucial for Guardiola's side. Despite a tough season marred by injuries and a significant points gap in the Premier League, Guardiola expressed pride in his team’s resilience.

The match also marked the debut of two January signings, Nicolas Gonzalez and Vitor Reis, though Gonzalez had to be substituted early due to injury, and Reis was withdrawn at halftime for tactical reasons.
