Despite Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on a rain-soaked day in Manchester, Pep Guardiola found reasons to be optimistic about the future of his team. With key players such as Erling Haaland and Rodri absent, and Ruben Dias only making a brief appearance off the bench, City fielded one of their youngest starting lineups in a Premier League match under Guardiola.
Despite the loss, he remained encouraged by the potential of his young squad, which included recent signings and emerging talents like Savinho and Jeremy Doku.
Guardiola acknowledged that the squad could undergo further changes, with transfer targets such as Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiasso and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz linked to the club. Some established names, including Kevin De Bruyne and Nathan Aké, appear integral to the club’s future, while the long-term roles of players like John Stones and Jack Grealish remain uncertain.
Although City have struggled in both the Premier League and their European campaign, Guardiola insisted that his side played brilliantly in recent matches against Newcastle and Liverpool, despite falling short in crucial moments.
The defeat leaves Manchester City 20 points behind league leaders Liverpool, effectively ending their title challenge. Guardiola acknowledged the gap but remained focused on securing a Champions League place for next season, with fifth place likely to be sufficient.
Currently sitting fourth, three points behind Nottingham Forest and only five ahead of 10th-placed Fulham, City must navigate a competitive battle for a top-four finish. Guardiola is confident his players will rise to the challenge, recognizing the quality of teams such as Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Forest.
While missing out on a fourth consecutive Premier League title and another Treble bid is a disappointment, Guardiola believes his squad still has plenty to play for. He dismissed concerns about motivation, emphasizing that if City fail to secure Champions League football, it will be due to performance rather than a lack of desire.
With 12 matches remaining, City must now shift focus from defending their title to ensuring their place among Europe’s elite next season.
