Guardiola Confident Manchester City Can Return to Peak Form Despite Recent Struggles

Posted : 03 December 2024

Pep Guardiola remains optimistic about Manchester City's potential despite their recent struggles, asserting that the team can return to their previous high standards once key players are back from injury. The defending Premier League champions have endured a tough run, losing six of their past seven games across all competitions, leaving them 11 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.

This downturn is particularly striking for a club that has dominated English football in recent years, winning six of the last seven Premier League titles.

Guardiola, whose side will face Nottingham Forest on Wednesday, expressed confidence that City’s current slump is not irreversible. "With all the squad this season, we'll be close to the level that we reached last season," Guardiola said in a pre-match press conference, underscoring his belief in the team's potential once fully fit.

Injury problems have heavily affected City this season, with major absences including Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, who will miss the remainder of the campaign, along with key players such as Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne, Mateo Kovacic, and Ruben Dias.

Despite their recent setbacks, Guardiola praised City’s performance against Liverpool, a 2-0 defeat on Sunday, describing the team as "magnificent." He highlighted that the squad is not far behind the second-place team in the Premier League, Arsenal, who are only two points ahead. The manager emphasized that consistency in performance and maintaining strong form in key moments would determine the team's future success.

Looking ahead, Guardiola noted that the club would discuss internally whether they need to strengthen the squad during the upcoming transfer window. He also reaffirmed Ederson’s status as his first-choice goalkeeper, despite the Brazilian being dropped for the Liverpool match in favor of Stefan Ortega following a mistake in the 3-3 draw against Feyenoord. Guardiola called on the fans to provide their full support, acknowledging the team’s need for collective encouragement during this challenging period.
