Antoine Griezmann's return to the France team was less than spectacular as they struggled to a 1-0 victory over Belgium in the Euro 2024 last 16, but he expressed satisfaction with their advancement to the quarterfinals. Having been a key player for Les Bleus, Griezmann was benched for the final group match against Poland due to a series of lackluster performances. However, he was reinstated in a new role on the right side of the attack for Monday's game in Duesseldorf.
Griezmann was part of a trio of attackers in a formation change implemented by coach Didier Deschamps. Despite this, he failed to create effective partnerships with Kylian Mbappe and Marcus Thuram, limiting France to long-range efforts in the first half. Reflecting on the match, Griezmann acknowledged the adjustment period needed for the new system. "The coach told me where he wanted me to play, and I committed to the role," he said, emphasizing his dedication to the team and the coach's trust in him.
Despite not being a traditional winger, Griezmann embraced the unfamiliar position, focusing on playing one-twos rather than taking on defenders individually. He affirmed his willingness to play any position, always giving his all for the team. "I can adapt to any role. My priority is to contribute 100 percent, regardless of where I'm placed on the field," he stated, highlighting his flexibility and team-first attitude.
Griezmann credited the team's solid defensive performance as the foundation of their victory. "Our defense was outstanding, and that's crucial for success in the tournament. We're very proud to reach the quarterfinals," he noted. The match was challenging, with Belgium performing well, but the introduction of Randal Kolo Muani, whose deflected shot five minutes from time secured the win, made the difference. France's defense also held firm, securing their third clean sheet of the tournament.
