Ryan Gravenberch marked his debut for Liverpool with a goal, securing a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Union St.-Gilloise in their Europa League encounter at Anfield on Thursday.
Gravenberch, who joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich on the deadline day, found the net in the 44th minute. The midfielder capitalized on a rebound after Union goalkeeper Anthony Moris couldn't hold onto a long-range shot from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
However, Liverpool faced a resilient Belgian opponent, and the win was only sealed in the second half's stoppage time when Diogo Jota scored. The Portuguese forward calmly slotted the ball past Moris from inside the box during a counter-attack.
In the first half, Darwin Núñez had a golden opportunity but side-footed wide from close range after a low cross from Mohamed Salah.
Liverpool's manager, Jurgen Klopp, acknowledged that his team could have performed better, saying, "We lost our rhythm slightly and conceded too many set-pieces. We should have been more precise in many aspects, but you have to take what you can get in these moments. I believe we showed maturity and professionalism, but there's room for improvement."
Liverpool currently leads Group E with six points after winning both of their opening matches, including the victory against LASK Linz. Toulouse holds the second spot with four points, secured with a first-half goal by Gabriel Suazo in their 1-0 win over LASK.
