Granit Xhaka Praises Switzerland's Resilience as They Advance in Euro 2024

Posted : 24 June 2024

Switzerland's captain, Granit Xhaka, praised his team’s newfound mentality and expressed optimism about their prospects at Euro 2024 following their advancement to the next stage. Switzerland came close to defeating hosts Germany on Sunday, leading in the first half through Dan Ndoye, but a stoppage-time equalizer by German striker Niclas Fuellkrug in Frankfurt dashed their hopes.

Entering the Euros under a cloud of uncertainty due to a lackluster qualifying campaign, Switzerland barely secured second place in their group. Their only victory in the last eight matches was against Andorra, and they had a tendency to lose leads late in games against teams like Israel and Kosovo. Despite this, Xhaka, who has been awarded player of the match twice at Euro 2024, highlighted the team's transformation.

"This team is hungry and has a completely new mentality, will, and passion," Xhaka said. "We want to show that again in the round of 16. We are on a very good path. The first step has been taken; we have survived the group stage and now we want more." Switzerland has consistently performed well in major tournaments, reaching the knockout stages in six successive events. Notably, they eliminated then-world champions France in Euro 2020 with a dramatic comeback and penalty shootout win.

Switzerland is expected to face Italy or Croatia next, which Xhaka admitted is "not a dream match" for them. Italy will play Croatia in Group B on Monday. Reflecting on their recent match, Xhaka commended his team’s defensive efforts against Germany. "Huge respect to the whole team for what they did in defence," he said. "You need a performance like that against a top team ...we went from underdogs to earning great respect."
