Graham Potter Named West Ham Head Coach to Replace Lopetegui

Posted : 09 January 2025

West Ham United have appointed Graham Potter as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal, replacing Julen Lopetegui. Potter returns to management for the first time since his departure from Chelsea in April 2023.

Tasked with lifting West Ham from their precarious 14th-place position in the Premier League, Potter expressed enthusiasm about the role, stating that both he and the club share a vision for hard work and long-term success. His first challenge will be an FA Cup third-round tie against Aston Villa on Friday.

Potter’s managerial reputation took a hit during his brief stint at Chelsea, where he managed only 12 wins in 31 games despite the club spending over €600 million on new players.

However, his success at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he guided the team to ninth in the Premier League, earned him high regard and paved the way for his appointment at West Ham. The club’s owners will hope Potter can reignite the form that saw the Hammers win the Conference League in 2023, ending their 23-year trophy drought.

Potter takes over from Lopetegui, who parted ways with West Ham after just 22 games in charge. The Spaniard struggled to implement an expansive playing style, leaving the team with nine losses in 20 league matches.

Despite significant investment in the squad, including signings such as Maximilian Kilman and Niclas Fullkrug, Lopetegui failed to deliver consistent results. His tenure ended after a 4-1 loss to Manchester City, marking the club’s second consecutive heavy defeat. West Ham’s board will be hoping Potter can steady the ship and deliver better performances moving forward.
