Graham Potter: Another Shocking Turn in Todd Boehly's Turbulent Reign at Chelsea
Posted : 12 April 2023
The harsh firing of Chelsea manager Graham Potter is the most recent development under owner Todd Boehly's brief and disorganized rule.
In September, Boehly enticed the 47-year-old away from Brighton's secure environment and the team he had been permitted to build with patience, time, and stability to a club where those three concepts are foreign.
Thomas Tuchel, the manager of Chelsea who won the Champions League, was given 100 days by the American before being let go.
And Potter received the same treatment after just 31 games, proving that anyone who thought Boehly would be treating managers with more compassion and decency than his vicious predecessor Roman Abramovich was gravely mistaken.
Chelsea already had a feeling of instability thanks to Boehly's haphazard £600 million transfer spree since taking over the club in the summer, but his abrupt firing of another manager only served to reinforce that impression.
The club administration offered Potter a five-year deal as well as promises of support and patience, but they could not stand by such big declarations.
Graham Potter was fired as the head coach of Chelsea on Sunday after only six months in the position.
Co-controlling shareholders Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali stated in a statement: "On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea.
"We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.
"Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season. We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter-final ahead. We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high."
Following Saturday's 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa, Potter's 11th defeat in 31 matches since taking over for Thomas Tuchel in September, Chelsea dropped into the bottom half of the Premier League.
It has been reported that Bruno Saltor, a coach who joined Potter at Chelsea after leaving Brighton with him, will lead the team as interim head coach.
