Australia's Graham Arnold Includes Young Talent Nestory Irankunda in Socceroos Squad

Posted : 29 May 2024

Australia's coach, Graham Arnold, has made an unexpected inclusion in his 25-man squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, calling up 18-year-old Nestory Irankunda shortly after the young winger expressed discontent about being overlooked for selection.

Irankunda, who currently plays for Adelaide United, had recently raised eyebrows in Australia by hinting at the possibility of switching allegiances to either Burundi or Tanzania, a move met with criticism from local soccer pundits.

Despite the controversy surrounding Irankunda's remarks, Arnold opted to extend a call-up to the talented youngster, marking his first inclusion in the Socceroos squad. Born in a Tanzanian refugee camp to Burundian parents, Irankunda's potential was further highlighted by his upcoming move to Bayern Munich in July, a testament to his burgeoning talent and promising future in the sport.

Arnold's squad selections also feature familiar faces such as Melbourne Victory playmaker Daniel Arzani, who made headlines as Australia's youngest World Cup footballer during the 2018 tournament in Russia.

Despite setbacks due to injury and limited appearances for the Socceroos since then, Arzani's inclusion, alongside new faces like uncapped Newcastle Jets forward Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, underscores Arnold's commitment to nurturing talent and maintaining Australia's competitive edge on the international stage.
