The Nasarawa State Executive Arm football team emerged victorious in a highly entertaining novelty football match held at the Lafia City Stadium on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
The match was part of the celebrations marking Nigeria's 64th Independence Day and the 28th anniversary of the creation of Nasarawa State.
In a stunning display of skill and determination, the governor and captain of the Executive Arm, Abdullahi Sule, scored the only and winning goal of the game toward the end of the first half, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
The governor expertly controlled a pass during a goal area scramble, sidestepped an onrushing defender, and then slotting the ball past the Legislative Arm's goalkeeper.
The evenly contested match saw both teams create scoring chances, but the Executive Arm's defense held strong.
The Legislative Arm's attack, led by Akwanga/Nasarawa Eggon/Wamba Federal House of Representatives member, Rt. Hon. Jeremiah Umaru, and Hon. Kassim Muhammad Kassim, threatened several times but could not find the back of the net against the Executive Arm's team, coached by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Chief Barr. Isaac Danladi.
The Executive Arm dominated possession from the blast of the whistle, with the governor and Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Jafaru Ango, missing the target from close range.
The lawmakers pushed hard in the second half for an equalizer, but the Executive Arm's goalkeeper, Rt. Hon. Shuaibu Sani (SSA to the governor on Youth and Students' Affairs), made crucial saves to deny them.
The governor's winning goal sparked jubilation among the Executive Arm's players and supporters, including two former governors of the state, Their Excellencies, Distinguished Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Distinguished Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura.
This was the second defeat for the Legislative Arm against the Executive Arm in consecutive meetings, with the first defeat being a 3-0 whitewash in 2023.
Gov. Sule said, "This victory is for the great people of Nasarawa State.
"I am proud of my teammates, and we showed that we are not just leaders, but also team players."
Umar said, "Congratulations to the Executive Arm team on their victory.
"Though we lost the game, we have won in terms of camaraderie and unity."
