Match Review: Win over Niger Tornadoes a "big relief" - Coach

Posted : 20 November 2023
It should be a big relief for Gombe United FC as they secured their first win after three winless matches and without a goal against their opponent.

Gombe United FC started the winless run on Match Day 6 of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a defeat to Akwa United FC in Eket, a match they lost by a lone goal.

They thereafter suffered a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of their co-tenant, Doma United FC, in the Pantami Stadium they both shared while it was their home match.

Not done with bashing, Gombe United FC suffered another humiliating defeat at the hands of Remo Stars with a 4-0 scoreline, the highest so far in the league.

With tension running high, Gombe United is condemned to return to winning ways, especially fixing the goal drought from the players.

Starting the game against Niger Tornadoes, Gombe United player, Umar Abba, scored in the 13th minute, a lone goal that gave his side victory during the Match Day 9 fixture of the NPFL at the Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe State, on Sunday.

Judging from the poor form of Gombe United FC, Niger Tornadoes aimed at capitalizing on the situation to secure a point, which did not go as planned.

The Chief coach of Niger Tornadoes, Maji Mohammed, said the match had been lost, and his team would look forward to seeing how to earn maximum points in subsequent matches.

Mohammed, on the sidelines of the match, said his team lost due to a negative impression, and he would look forward to a brighter encounter in the next games.

“The match is a setback because if we had gotten a point, it would have been a plus. We came here with a plan, but it didn’t work as planned.

“This means that we will go back home and plan our next home game and see how to secure our own three points.”

The coach of Gombe United, Alhaji Kwairanga, explained that their win against their opponents was the best gift ever.

He noted that the gained point was vital in their effort to succeed in the NPFL.

He said, “Getting maximum points against Niger Tornadoes is a big relief and the most important thing for us today in our effort to climb up on the league table.”

Kwairanga noted that the game plan for the match was successfully executed with the home win.

“Our game plan worked because we were looking for the three points and we got it. We are not motivated at all; we are seeking and pleading with the state government to come to our rescue so that we can do more,” he said.

Niger Tornadoes will welcome Akwa United FC to Kaduna, their home ground, for the Match Day 10 encounter while Gombe United FC will travel to Ilorin to face Kwara United FC.
