On Sunday, Gombe United FC found themselves in an unfortunate position, marking a significant moment in the ongoing 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Their 0-2 home loss to visiting Sunshine Stars FC not only sealed their fate but also etched their name into the league's history books as the first team to be relegated from the top flight league this season.


With this loss, the Savannah Scorpions confirmed their relegation with four matches still remaining in the season. The disappointment of dropping out of the premier league is compounded by the fact that they will now have to compete in the Nigeria National League (NNL) in the upcoming season.


This relegation marks the fourth time Gombe United FC has faced this fate since the turn of the millennium. They join the ranks of Kwara Utd (6), Wikki Tourists (5), and Jigawa Golden Stars as teams who have experienced relegation multiple times.


The ill-fated match at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe saw Sunshine Stars FC assert their dominance early on. In the 9th minute of play, Promise Awosanmi found the back of the net with a stunning strike from outside the box, setting the tone for the rest of the match.


As the game progressed, Sunshine Stars FC further solidified their lead, with Lucky Nwafor doubling their advantage. This second goal effectively sealed the fate of the Savannah Scorpions, ensuring their exit from the Premier Football League.
