"Going well; I'll continue," Ndidi on Leicester role
Posted : 26 September 2023
Wilfred Ndidi, Super Eagles' central midfielder, has shed light on his evolving midfield position at Leicester City with the club's new Argentine coach, Enzo Maresca.
Starting as a central midfielder, Ndidi transitioned into a defensive midfield role during his tenure with Belgian team Racing Genk. This shift continued after his move to Leicester City in 2017, where he maintained this defensive orientation throughout various managerial stints.
Yet, with Enzo Maresca's recent appointment, Ndidi's role has seen another shift. This season, he's been assigned a more forward-focused role, quickly adapting with 3 goals and 1 assist in his first 10 games.
His vital contributions were evident in Leicester's recent Championship clash against Bristol City, where his actions led to a decisive penalty, clinched by Jamie Vardy for a 1-0 win.
Reflecting on this transition, Ndidi acknowledges the support from Maresca. "I'm grateful to the coach for guiding me through this new phase," he commented on Leicester City's official portal. "Teammates familiar with this role have also been supportive. While I've always possessed this skillset, it's Maresca who's truly brought it to the fore. He continues to motivate me."
So far, Ndidi's consistent presence in Leicester's matches this season has been instrumental, with the team clinching seven victories in eight Championship games, propelling them to the league's summit.
