Goalkeeper Okonkwo from Arsenal shares the story behind his transfer to Wrexham
Posted : 19 October 2023
Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has officially confirmed his loan move to the Football League club, Wrexham, at the conclusion of the summer transfer window.
The Hale End Academy graduate made the temporary switch to Wrexham in pursuit of regular playing time, which Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta couldn't provide due to the presence of David Raya and England's Aaron Ramsdale, who were ahead of him in the Emirates Stadium's goalkeeper hierarchy.
This marks Okonkwo's third loan move away from the English capital; he spent the first half of the previous season on loan at Crewe Alexandra and wrapped up the 2022-2023 campaign at Sturm Graz, where he contributed to their victory in the Austrian Cup.
Since his transfer to the Red Dragons on the deadline day, the Arsenal-owned goalkeeper has impressed by keeping three clean sheets in five appearances.
Various European and Football League clubs had been monitoring Okonkwo's situation, but none made an official offer to Arsenal.
Regarding the circumstances of his move to Wrexham, Okonkwo revealed during the Yours Mine Away Podcast: "My agents contacted me close to the end of the transfer window and presented this as a possibility, a move to Wrexham. I was initially hesitant but intrigued. I was aware of the club's history and reputation, even though I hadn't watched the documentary. But in the football world, everyone talks about Wrexham as a big club now. Once the opportunity emerged, I thought it would be a great move to this club."
Okonkwo originally joined Arsenal as a schoolboy and is now in the last eight months of his contract with the North London club.
