Giuliano Simeone Shines as Atletico Madrid's Secret Weapon

Posted : 01 December 2024

Atletico Madrid’s season opener was a disappointment despite an impressive summer acquisition campaign, leaving the team caught between two playing styles. However, in a crucial moment, Diego Simeone, known as “Cholo,” turned to his youngest son, Giuliano, to bring a change to the team. With little experience but immense determination, Giuliano’s impact was undeniable, and it soon became clear that talent runs in the family.

Giuliano’s performance in Atletico's 2-1 comeback victory against Alaves was especially significant for his father, marking Diego Simeone’s 700th game as manager of Atletico Madrid, making him the first to reach this milestone in La Liga. The young Simeone came on as a substitute in the second half when Alaves were leading 1-0. His presence turned the game around, with two of Atletico's goals directly linked to his influence, proving that his spot in the team was earned through skill rather than nepotism.

Initially, many fans were skeptical about Giuliano’s inclusion in the squad, given that Atletico had spent heavily on attacking reinforcements, including Julián Alvarez from Manchester City and Alexandre Sorloth from Villarreal. The 21-year-old winger/striker had never been considered the standout talent in Atletico’s academy and had a mixed record during his loan spells at Alaves and Real Zaragoza. Despite this, his integration into the team has been a revelation, with one goal and three assists so far, and his contribution in Atletico’s six-game winning streak has been crucial.

Beyond his offensive contributions, Giuliano has also helped strengthen Atletico’s defense. Since becoming a regular starter, the team has conceded fewer goals, while averaging more points per game in La Liga. His tireless work ethic, in line with his father’s philosophy of toughness and dedication, has been a key factor in this improvement. Cholo has expressed the need for a more modern and open style, and while Atletico initially struggled to balance this with their traditional defensive strength, Giuliano’s determination has brought a new dynamic to the team.

Although the team’s transformation cannot be attributed solely to Giuliano, his efforts have undoubtedly played a pivotal role in restoring the “Cholismo” style of play that has defined Atletico under his father. His contributions, both in attack and defense, have addressed some of the weaknesses that plagued the team earlier in the season. Giuliano's efforts have also sparked discussions about his potential future with the Argentina national team, following his recent debut in a match against Peru.

As Atletico continues their positive run, with a favorable schedule until their match against Barcelona on December 21, Giuliano is expected to remain a key figure in their ongoing success. His performance has not only helped revive his father’s philosophy but has also given the team a much-needed edge in their quest for further victories.
