Girona surges to the top of LaLiga with late victory over Celta Vigo

Girona made a strong statement in LaLiga, leading the charge against Spain's giants in the upcoming Clasico, as they clinched a 1-0 victory over Celta Vigo on Friday to claim the top spot. Yangel Herrera's late strike from the edge of the box secured a dramatic win, putting Girona three points ahead of Real Madrid and four points above Barcelona in the league standings.
 
The first half of the match saw limited scoring opportunities, with Celta's Jonathan Bamba attempting a shot on goal, which was well handled by Girona's goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga. Girona controlled possession but found Celta's defense resolute under the guidance of manager Rafa Benitez, even though Celta had only one win in their last 11 matches.
 
As the game progressed, Girona began to create more chances, but Cristhian Stuani and Miguel Gutierrez couldn't find the target. Celta Vigo seemed to have found the net through Luca de la Torre, but the goal was disallowed for a slight foul by Carlos Dotor on Gazzaniga, which left the visitors aggrieved.
 
Amidst the controversy, Girona clinched the match with Yangel Herrera's decisive strike from just outside the box, securing a well-deserved win. Girona winger Savinho expressed his satisfaction, stating, "It was a very hard game. I'm very happy for the win. We deserve it; we work very hard." Celta Vigo finds themselves in 17th place, just two points clear of the relegation zone.
