Girona's Bid for LaLiga Runner-Up Stumbles with Late Draw Against Alaves

Girona's pursuit of securing the runners-up position in LaLiga encountered a setback on Friday as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Alaves, courtesy of a late goal from Jon Guridi in the ninth minute of added time. Eric Garcia swiftly put Girona ahead within four minutes at the Mendizorroza stadium, only for Guridi to equalize for the home side just eight minutes later.

 

Despite Artem Dovbyk, the league's top scorer with 20 goals, not finding the net, his assist to Yangel Herrera a minute before halftime seemed to seal the victory for Girona. However, Guridi's late intervention dashed their hopes of securing all three points as the match extended into added time.

 

With the draw, Girona's points tally reaches 75, placing them 12 points adrift of Real Madrid, the league champions, and a precarious two points ahead of their Catalan rivals, Barcelona. Barcelona's chance to climb to second place awaits on Monday, where a victory against Real Sociedad could see them leapfrog Girona in the standings.

 

As Real Madrid prepares to face relegation-threatened Granada on Saturday, their recent triumph against Bayern Munich in the Champions League takes a backseat. Granada's fate in the relegation battle could be sealed before kickoff at the Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium, depending on the result of Real Mallorca's clash with Las Palmas earlier in the day.
