Girona suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, marking their second consecutive LaLiga loss despite scoring first. Bryan Gil's opener had put them ahead, but a late brace from substitute Randy Nteka turned the game around for Rayo.
This pattern of conceding leads has become a troubling trend for Girona, with Gil expressing frustration, saying, "For the second week in a row we've gone ahead and gave away the three points. We have to be self-critical; we can't allow that to keep happening."
Following their remarkable third-place finish in LaLiga last season, Girona has struggled to maintain that form. They have managed just two wins in their last 11 games across all competitions, highlighting a stark decline.
Their Champions League campaign ended prematurely with six defeats in seven matches, and they now sit ninth in LaLiga with 28 points, just two behind the European qualification spots. Gil admitted the team has difficulty handling pressure, especially when opponents press aggressively, and called for more effort in attack to support the team defensively.
Manager Michel acknowledged Rayo's performance, noting their intensity disrupted Girona's rhythm and style of play. "Perhaps the result is fair because they had more chances and imposed a rhythm that prevented us from controlling the game," he said. Despite their struggles, Gil remained optimistic, urging the team to correct their mistakes and focus on their ambition, believing they have the potential to turn their season around.
